What Equipment is Needed for Direct TV Streaming?

Writer's picture: Craig WhitakerCraig Whitaker

With many clients looking for ways to cut cable costs, DIRECTV Streaming has become a popular choice. Some of our clients have been asking, Do I need a satellite? The answer is no! Unlike traditional satellite-based services, DIRECTV Streaming is an internet-based service.

Here’s what you need to get started:

  • Strong Internet Connection: Since this is a streaming service, reliable internet is essential. DIRECTV recommends at least 8 Mbps per stream. For example, if you have four TVs, you'll need a minimum of 32 Mbps. For 4K video content, it’s a good idea to double this speed for the best experience.

  • Streaming Device for Each TV: Every TV will need a device like a Roku, Amazon Firestick, or Apple TV to run the DIRECTV Streaming app. Some of our clients have also asked if they can use the app directly on their smart TVs. While this is possible, DIRECTV does not recommend it, as performance may vary.
