What are the differences between Software and Firmware updates?

During a discussion of Bose Soundtouch updates, I was asked the difference between software and firmware updates. I must admit that was a first and somewhat out of my field. So after a little research, here is what I found. Surprisingly for me, I learned Firmware is a variety of Software. Software can be stored on your hardware or in the cloud and usually refers to applications and programs such MS Office on your computer or any various phone apps. On the other hand, Firmware is stored on your hardware and is designed to help your device run a specific task. Firmware cannot be stored in the cloud. From a practical standpoint, the biggest difference is the end user, you, can perform software updates. In the vast majority of cases, manufacturers do allow end user to perform Firmware updates and usually requires the purchase of new hardware or equipment.
