Absolutely! With a little planning, you can take your Sonos system from one home to another without losing your music services, playlists, or Trueplay tuning. The trick is knowing the right steps so you don’t have to start from scratch.
Step 1 – Pick Your Connection Method
When you set up in the new home, you have two main options:
1. Wired SonosNet (Our Favorite Installer Trick)
Wire one Sonos speaker or a Sonos Boost directly to the new home’s router.
All other speakers will automatically connect through SonosNet, even if the Wi-Fi name and password are completely different.
Fast, reliable, and no Wi-Fi setup required.
2. Wireless Wi-Fi Mode
If you know your new Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password ahead of time, add them before moving:
In the Sonos app, go to Settings → System → Network → Manage Networks → Add Network and enter the new details.
Your speakers will connect instantly when powered on at the new location.
Step 2 – Prep Before You Move
Make sure you’re signed into your Sonos account in the app.
Run software updates so you’re starting fresh.
Note your room names and groups so you can keep the same setup.
Label each speaker with its room name to make unpacking easier.
Step 3 – Set Up in the New Home
If Using Wired SonosNet:
Wire one Sonos unit to the router.
Power up the rest — they’ll join automatically.
(Optional) Add your new Wi-Fi credentials so you can unplug the wired unit later.
If Using Wi-Fi and Didn’t Pre-Load:
Wire one Sonos device to the router.
In the app, go to Settings → System → Network → Manage Networks → Add Network.
Enter the new Wi-Fi info, then unplug the Ethernet cable once it connects.
Repeat the process for any stragglers.
Step 4 – Fine-Tune and Enjoy
Run Trueplay Tuning in each room (iOS required) — every space sounds different.
Test music services, grouping, and alarms.
Re-link voice assistants if you use them.
Pro Tips from the Field
Avoid using guest networks — Sonos needs devices to talk to each other.
Mesh Wi-Fi systems sometimes require turning off isolation or band steering.
Portable speakers like Move or Roam always need the new Wi-Fi added manually.
