Can I Connect an External Source to My Sonos System?

Former Bose system owners often ask if they can connect external devices to a Sonos system. The short answer is yes but it works differently than a traditional Bose Lifestyle system.

Unlike Bose, Sonos does not use a central console or receiver. Instead, each Sonos component connects independently, and how you add devices depends on the type of source.

For video devices such as a Roku, Amazon Fire Stick, cable/satellite box, or DVD player, these connect directly to your TV. The audio is then sent from the TV to your Sonos soundbar (Arc Ultra, Beam, etc.) automatically.

For audio-only devices like a CD player, turntable, or music server, these connect using a line-in (aux) input available on select Sonos products, including the Sonos Amp, Sonos Port, Era 100, and Era 300 (with a Sonos Line-In adapter).

A couple of important notes:

• Sonos soundbars do not have aux inputs

• If you’re using a Sonos Amp for surround speakers in a home theater, its line-in is not available for external sources

Once connected, your audio source can be played in that room or streamed to any other Sonos zone in your home.

If your music is stored on a computer or network drive, Sonos can also access and stream it wirelessly—no physical connection required.
