Can I Connect My Music Library to My Sonos System?

One of the questions we hear from new Sonos clients is whether they can still play the music library they've built over the years on their computer or an external hard drive. The answer is yes. Sonos can access your personal music library, and once it's set up, you can enjoy your music throughout your home.

Step 1: Share Your Music Folder

For Windows computers:

• Right-click your music folder and select Properties.

• Click the Sharing tab, then Advanced Sharing.

• Check Share this folder and assign Read permissions (such as for "Everyone").

• Make note of the network path (for example: \\YourComputerName\MusicFolder).

  
  

For macOS computers:

• Open System Settings (or System Preferences).

• Go to Sharing and enable File Sharing.

• Add your music folder under Shared Folders.

Step 2: Add the Library to Sonos

• Open the Sonos app on your mobile device or desktop.

• Go to Settings.

• Select Music Library (or Manage > Music Library Settings on the desktop app).

• Choose Add Shared Folder.

• Enter the full network path to your shared music folder.

• Enter the username and password you use to sign in to your computer or NAS (Network Attached Storage) device.

• Select Add or Next to complete the setup. Sonos will then index your music library.

  
  

Once the indexing process is complete, your personal music collection will appear alongside your streaming services in the Sonos app, making it easy to enjoy your favorite songs in any room of your home.
