Can My Existing Bose In-Ceiling or Outdoor Speakers Be Reused with a New System?

As we get closer to the end of the Bose SoundTouch app, many of our clients are asking what parts of their existing system can still be used. Last week we covered older Bose amplifiers. This week, we’re focusing on Bose speakers and whether they can work with newer systems like Sonos.
The good news:In most cases, yes, your existing Bose in-ceiling and outdoor speakers can be reused.
A simple rule of thumb is this:If your Bose system was installed after 2005, there’s a very good chance your speakers are compatible with modern amplifiers like the Sonos Amp.
However, there are a few important exceptions.
Some older Bose speakers used 1.2-ohm drivers, which are not compatible with standard amplifiers or receivers, including Sonos. These models include:
Bose 102SE in-ceiling speakers
Bose 102FR in-ceiling speakers
Bose 151SE outdoor speakers
Bose FS-51SE in-ground speakers
In addition, Bose cube speakers are not compatible with other brands of amplifiers. These were designed to work only with Bose systems. The one exception is the Bose AM-5 system, which includes cube speakers paired with a passive subwoofer—this setup can be adapted in certain situations.
If you’re not sure what you have, we’re happy to help.
