Connecting a VCR to a Smart TV

Earlier this week, I received a question I never expected to hear again. A good friend called and asked if he could connect his VCR to his smart TV. After my initial surprise, I asked why. His answer gave me a new perspective on the value of those old videotapes. He wanted to convert his family event videos to digital files and needed to check the content and condition of his tapes first.

Thinking about it, I realized that many grandparents might want to do the same. The process was quite simple. Most VCRs only have two video outputs: composite and coaxial. The composite output uses the yellow RCA cable, which isn’t typically found on smart TVs anymore. However, the coaxial output—the type of cable usually connecting your cable/satellite box to the wall jack—is still present on most smart TVs.

To play the VCR, simply connect the coaxial output of the VCR to the coaxial input on the TV. Be sure to select the correct TV input, usually labeled “TV” or “Ant.” Note that with this connection method, the audio from the videotape will not play through your Bose system but will instead come through the TV speakers.
