Can My Bose Volume Controls Be Used with 3rd Party Amplifiers?

During a recent in-home consultation, we encountered multiple Bose in-wall volume controls installed as part of an older Bose Lifestyle system. The homeowner was upgrading to a new Sonos system and asked if she could continue using the existing Bose volume controls with her new Sonos amplifiers.

Unfortunately, the answer is no—and here’s why:

Why Bose Volume Controls Aren’t Compatible

Sonos amplifiers are designed to be controlled through the Sonos app or integrated smart systems. They are not compatible with traditional in-wall volume controls.

In addition, Bose in-wall volume controls are not standard inline devices. Unlike typical volume controls that sit between the amplifier and speakers to reduce the amount of power going to the speakers, Bose volume controls are part of a proprietary low-voltage system. They send control signals back to specific Bose amplifiers, such as the BIV, SA-1, SA-2, and SA-3 models.

Because of this design, Bose volume controls only work with those specific Bose multi-room amplifiers and cannot be repurposed for use with third-party systems like Sonos.
