Picture, No Sound, TV or Sound System?

Recently, we had two clients call with the exact same issue: their TV had a picture but no sound. Interestingly, while the symptoms were the same, the causes turned out to be different—one was a TV problem, and the other was a sound system issue.

If this happens to you, here are a few simple steps to help figure out where the problem lies:

Step 1: Test the TV by Itself

Disconnect your TV from your sound system.

  • Go into your TV settings menu and make sure the TV speakers are turned on.

  • Normally, when using an external sound system, the TV speakers are disabled.

  • If you still don’t have sound, the issue is with the TV itself.

Step 2: Test the Sound System

If you now have sound from the TV speakers, chances are the issue lies with your sound system. To confirm:

  • Try another audio source on your sound system, such as streaming music or a built-in radio.

  • If there’s no sound from these sources, the sound system is the problem.

  • If there is sound, the issue may be as simple as the cables connecting your TV to the sound system—check or replace them.

Bottom Line

No sound doesn’t always mean your whole system is broken. By testing the TV and sound system separately, you can quickly narrow down the issue and avoid unnecessary repairs or replacements.
