Where Should I Place My Sonos Amplifier?

The simple answer? Almost anywhere inside your home.

And we emphasize the word inside, Sonos amplifiers must be installed in a dry, indoor location.

Beyond that, there are only a couple of basic requirements:

  • The amplifier must be able to connect to your Wi-Fi network.

  • It needs access to a standard electrical outlet.

Upgrading from a Bose System?

If you’re upgrading from a Bose system, we typically recommend placing the new Sonos amplifier in the same location as your existing Bose amplifier. This allows you to reuse the current speaker wiring and keeps the upgrade simple and cost-effective.

Installing a New System Without Existing Wiring?

If you’re not replacing a system that already has wiring in place, the best location for your Sonos amplifier is wherever it makes the most sense for running speaker wires. Choosing a convenient, centralized location can make installation cleaner and more efficient.

A Few Additional Tips

  • If you have multiple Sonos amplifiers, they do not need to be located together. Each amp can be placed wherever it works best for that specific zone.

  • If you plan to connect an auxiliary source—such as a CD player or turntable—place the Sonos amplifier close to that device to minimize cable length and keep the installation neat.

The Bottom Line

Sonos amplifiers offer flexibility in placement, but planning the location carefully can make your system cleaner, simpler, and more reliable.
