Why Do We Ask If You Have Wi-Fi Extenders or Access Points?

One of the first questions we ask before installing a new Sonos system is whether your home uses Wi-Fi extenders, mesh devices, or wireless access points. It may seem like an odd question, but it's one of the most common causes of Sonos connectivity issues.

Many Wi-Fi extenders can be configured in one of two ways:

  • Access Point (AP) or Bridge Mode – The extender becomes part of your existing network, allowing all of your devices to communicate with one another.

  • Router Mode – The extender creates a second network with its own IP address range, even though it may use the same Wi-Fi name (SSID).

When an extender is configured in Router Mode, your phone may connect to one network while your Sonos speakers connect to the other. When that happens, the Sonos app may not be able to find any of your speakers, making it appear that the system has stopped working.

The Solution

For the best Sonos performance, your Wi-Fi extenders or access points should be configured in Access Point (AP) Mode or Bridge Mode so they become part of your home's single network. Your main router should remain the only device assigning IP addresses (DHCP). This ensures your phone, tablet, and every Sonos speaker are all on the same network and can communicate reliably.
