As more clients move from older Bose systems to Sonos, one of the most common questions we hear is whether Sonos can play music that’s already stored on a computer or external hard drive.
The good news is yes—it can, and the setup is usually straightforward. Many clients are able to do this on their own, or with a quick virtual service call if they need help.
How to Add Music from Your Computer to the Sonos App
Open the Sonos app and go to Settings (tap the gear icon in the upper-right corner).
Select Music Library.
Choose Add Shared Folder.
You’ll need to enter the path to your music folder on your computer or network drive.
Because this step varies depending on whether you’re using Windows or macOS, it’s best to search your computer’s Help menu for instructions on sharing a folder.
Once the folder path is created, copy and paste it into the Sonos app.
If your music folder is password-protected, enter the username and password when prompted.
Tap Add to complete the process.
One Final Tip
Depending on the size of your music library, the initial indexing process may take a few minutes. Once it’s complete, your music will appear in the Sonos app and be available to play throughout your home.
If you’d like help setting this up or want to explore other ways to enjoy your music on Sonos, we’re happy to help.
