What Can Affect My Wi-Fi Network Performance?

We’re often called out to homes where clients say, “My internet is fast, but my Wi-Fi isn’t reliable.”

That’s an important distinction because Wi-Fi performance is affected by much more than just your internet speed.

Here are some of the most common factors that can impact how well your Wi-Fi network performs throughout your home:

1. Distance from the Router

The farther you are from your router, the weaker the Wi-Fi signal becomes. Speeds are always strongest close to the router and decrease as you move farther away.

2. Walls and Building Materials

Certain materials interfere with Wi-Fi signals more than others. Brick, concrete, plaster, stone, metal, and even mirrors can significantly reduce signal strength as Wi-Fi passes through them.

3. Router Location

Routers tucked into basements, closets, or cabinets don’t perform as well as those placed in a central, open location. Height also matters, routers generally work better when elevated.

4. Number of Connected Devices

Smart TVs, phones, tablets, computers, cameras, doorbells, thermostats, and speakers all compete for bandwidth. The more devices connected, the harder your network has to work.

5. Interference from Other Electronics

Devices like cordless phones, baby monitors, microwaves, and neighboring Wi-Fi networks can cause interference—especially on older 2.4 GHz networks.

6. Outdated Equipment

Older routers and modems may not support modern Wi-Fi standards, even if you’re paying for high-speed internet. In many cases, the hardware, not the service, is the bottleneck.

7. Network Configuration

Incorrect settings, outdated firmware, or poorly configured extenders can create dropouts, slow speeds, or inconsistent performance throughout the home.

Why This Matters for Sonos and Smart Homes

Systems like Sonos rely on a stable, consistent Wi-Fi connection. Poor Wi-Fi can lead to:

• Music dropouts

• Rooms falling out of sync

• Delayed response in the app

• Difficulty grouping rooms

The Bottom Line

If your Wi-Fi isn’t performing well, the issue isn’t always your internet provider. Coverage, equipment, layout, and interference all play a role and fixing the right problem makes all the difference.
