What Are the Differences Between the Sonos Era 100 and Era 300?

During our consultations, clients often ask us about the differences between the Sonos Era 100 and Sonos Era 300 and which speaker is the better choice for their room. While both are excellent wireless speakers, they are designed for somewhat different listening experiences.

The Sonos Era 100 is a compact, versatile speaker that is a great choice for adding music to a bedroom, kitchen, office, bathroom, or other smaller to medium-sized room. Despite its compact size, the Era 100 uses two angled tweeters to provide stereo separation from a single speaker, along with a larger midwoofer for impressive bass.

The Sonos Era 300 is a larger and more powerful speaker designed for listeners looking for a wider, more immersive listening experience. Its unique design uses six drivers that direct sound forward, to the sides, and upward. Most importantly, the Era 300 supports Dolby Atmos spatial audio, allowing compatible music to surround you rather than simply come from one direction.

Here are some of the key differences:

• Size: The Era 100 is smaller and easier to place on a countertop, shelf, or table. The Era 300 is considerably larger and requires more space around it to deliver its best performance.

• Speakers: The Era 100 has three drivers—two tweeters and one midwoofer. The Era 300 has six drivers—four tweeters and two woofers.

• Stereo Sound: A single Era 100 provides stereo separation, while the Era 300 creates a much wider and more immersive soundstage.

• Dolby Atmos: The Era 300 supports Dolby Atmos spatial audio. The Era 100 does not.

• Home Theater: A pair of Era 100 or Era 300 speakers can be used as surrounds with compatible Sonos soundbars. For a premium home theater system, the Era 300 is our preferred choice because of its ability to provide a more immersive Dolby Atmos surround experience.

• Streaming & Control: Both speakers connect to your Sonos system through Wi-Fi and can also stream directly from compatible Bluetooth devices. Both are compatible with Sonos Voice Control.

• Placement: The Era 100 is ideal when space is limited. Because the Era 300 directs sound in several directions, including upward, proper placement and some open space around the speaker are more important.

So, which one should you choose? If you are looking for an excellent everyday Sonos speaker for streaming music in a bedroom, kitchen, office, or other secondary area, the Era 100 is usually all you need. If you want a more powerful speaker with a wider soundstage, Dolby Atmos spatial audio, or premium surrounds for your Sonos home theater, the Era 300 is worth the upgrade.
