Why Is There No Sound Coming from My Bose Lifestyle System?

We hear this one a lot lately—and it’s no surprise. Bose stopped making their popular Lifestyle systems nearly 10 years ago, and as these systems age, more and more users are running into issues—especially with sound dropping out.

So what’s going on when your system powers on, but you’re not getting any sound?

Here’s a quick guide to help figure out if the issue is with the Bose system itself or something connected to it (like a cable box, TV, or even the remote).

Troubleshooting Steps to Try

  • Check power first.

Make sure both the console and the subwoofer are plugged in and getting power.

  • Swap out the remote batteries.

Sometimes it’s just a simple fix! Replace the batteries and try using the remote. If the remote still doesn’t work...

  • Use the buttons on the console.

Try turning on the system directly from the console. If it powers up with the buttons, your remote is likely the problem.

  • Try a different source.

Don’t assume it’s the whole system. Try playing the radio, a CD, or even SoundTouch streaming (if your system supports it).

If any of those work, then your Lifestyle system is fine, and the issue may be with your TV, a cable, or the connected device itself.

  • Still no sound from any source?

Now it’s time to look at the console and subwoofer connection. Check the cable that runs from the “Main” or “Acoustimass” output on the back of the console to the subwoofer. If that’s secure and there’s still no sound, the problem is likely with the console or subwoofer.

  • Have a wireless subwoofer?

If you don’t see a cable between the console and subwoofer, you’ve got a wireless model. In that case, if there’s no sound after following the steps above, the issue is likely the console—that’s what powers everything in these systems.

So Now What?

Unfortunately, Bose no longer repairs Lifestyle systems, and without special test equipment, there’s no easy way to tell if the console or subwoofer is at fault—and at this point, it doesn’t really matter since neither can be serviced.
